How dangerous is teaching my kids some woodworking skills?

I don't think that it's dangerous at all. Under the right circumstances. I think the children should be older so they can understand that woodworking can be dangerous. But with proper supervision and instruction, I think this can be a wonderful way to spend some quality time with your kids.

Woodworking would probably be best with kids 12 and older. I teach 4th grade and I know in my classroom it would be an accident waiting to happen.

Comment #3 mongoose from USA -

I think the danger is that they will feel a confidence to initiate fire and burning on their own. make sure you instill upon them a sense that an adult must be near.

I'm too accident prone to try woodworking and I'm an adult. It is a craft that intrigues me, though.

Comment #5 Alain from Old Country -

The main problem is with sharp edged tools. It's one thing to supervise kids working with with manual tools, but when you get to power tools it's a different story. The high speed of power tools is the big danger. The slightest touch and quite serious injuries can result. I've seen qualified machinists with years of experience, and missing fingers. I don't mean to frighten anyone, but it is best not to even think of allowing younger kids to operate power saws or high speed tools with exposed cutting surfaces.

I don't know how young your kids are, but I would just start out with pre-cut material and teach them how to piece it together.

HI

All tools must be used with adults present.
